The plague of fiery serpents sent upon God’s people was, in reality, a self-inflicted punishment, resulting from their frequent murmuring. God’s judgment was in allowing what their own presumption invited. But in answer to His people’s repentance, God prescribed the erecting of a bronze serpent to which all might look in faith and be healed.
The same hope is present today. Jesus said, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:14). He clearly says that the bronze serpent typified His being raised upon the cross. Our healing, both spiritual and physical, comes from looking to and identifying with Christ crucified, “by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Pet. 2:24).
Jesus, in dying on the cross, offered us a way to life. All we need to do is look and live. Whatever you need today, whether it is freedom for your soul or health for your body, the promise is there for you.
