Just like the man in this Scripture, all of us want to build our lives on something that is solid, firm, and secure as stone. That “something” we seek is indeed a stone, and 1 Peter 2:6 declares that Christ is that cornerstone.
But this text also points out that the type of man we are to emulate is the one who hears the sayings of the Lord and does them. Those two facts cannot be separated: if we want to build our lives on Christ, the chief cornerstone, we must hear and obey His Word. When life seems to change as frequently as shifting sand, with challenging circumstances, broken relationships, and fluctuating social standards, it is to the solid, rock-like foundation of Scripture we must turn.
With the psalmist, let us daily cry out: Lord, “lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2). That’s the only sure place to build our lives!
